Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery
LABS is a National Instites of Health (NIH)-funded consortium or six clinical centers and data coordinating center working in cooperation with NIH scientific staff to plan, develop, and conduct coordinated clinical, epidemiological, and behavioral research in bariatric surgery.  LABS has brought together experts in bariatric surgery, obesisty research, internal medicine, endocrinology, behavioral science, outcomes research, epidemiology, and other relevant fields to plan and conduct studies that will analyze the risks and benefits of bariatric surgery and its impact on the health and well-being of patients with extreme obesity, and identify the kinds of patients who are most likely to benefit.  The consortium has developed a database for collecting standardized information on patients undergoing bariatric surgery at the participating clinical centers. Rigorously collected information on patient characteristics, types of surgery, medical and psychosocial outcomes, and economic factors will ultimately provide science-based information on the risks and benefits of bariatric surgery. This information should lead to rational recommendations for clinical care.

AN Palm

Women ages 18 and older who have symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa are invited to take part in a research project.  This study is being conducted by the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute (NRI) and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences.  This study provides us with information about Anorexia Nervosa – there is no treatment involved.  Participants will be asked to complete a series of interviews and questionnaires, a blood draw, and a brief physical exam.  After completing this portion of the study you will be asked to carry a palm pilot with you continuously for 2 weeks.  During this time the palm pilot will randomly beep you 6 times/day to answer a series of questions on the palm pilot (2-3 minutes).  You will also be asked to record certain behaviors on the palm pilot as they occur throughout the day.  In addition, you will be called three times over the 2-week period to report your daily food intake.

You will be paid $100 for each week that you carry the palm pilot.  You may also earn a $50 bonus for responding to the palm pilot beeps on time -- a total of $250.

ICAT for Bulimia Nervosa

Integrative Cognitive Affective Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa

Individuals ages 18 and older who have symptoms of bulimia nervosa are invited to take part in a research project.  This study is being conducted by the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute (NRI) and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences.  This study aims to compare a new form of treatment for bulimia nervosa to the treatment most commonly used.  If an individual is interested in the study, she or he will be asked to participate in a series of interviews and questionnaires followed by 16 weeks of free treatment.  Immediately following treatment, and again after 4 months have passed, there will be further interviews to determine the effectiveness of the treatment given.
