Radisson Hotel-Fargo

Friday, November 19th

12:30 P.M. – 5:00 P.M.

Dear Colleagues,

This note is to invite you to attend an educational training program sponsored by the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute at the Radisson Hotel in Fargo on Friday afternoon, November 19. This series of presentations/workshops will focus on manual-based interventions for eating disorders, suicidality, childhood trauma and compulsive buying. NRI has sponsored similar conferences every year for several years. However, we are using a different format this year and will have two presentations/workshops of 2 hours each. The four topics and a brief description of them are shown at the bottom of this letter. As usual the program will be offered free of charge and certificates of attendance will be distributed to participants; however, we will not be formally seeking CEUs from any professional organizations so that we can offer the conference free of charge for health care professionals.

If you would like to attend we suggest you register as early as possible as attendance at previous conferences has been quite strong and we plan to limit participation in each of the four sessions to 25 individuals. We hope to see you there.

Best wishes and call if you have any questions.

Yours truly,

James E. Mitchell, M.D.

Session 1: Integrative Cognitive Affect Therapy (ICAT) for Bulimia Nervosa

Wonderlich

This workshop will introduce the audience to a new treatment for bulimia nervosa through a review of the theory and empirical support for ICAT. However, the major emphasis of the session will be placed on clinical transcripts demonstrating clinical technique and key treatment issues.

12:45 - 2:45

Session 1: Evidence-based Intervention for Suicidality

Gordon

This workshop will include training in a scientifically-informed risk assessment protocol that prioritizes the most dangerous risk factors for suicide. In addition, recommended actions for each level of suicide risk will be outlined, and guidelines for the documentation of suicide risk will be provided. The workshop will also provide an introduction to evidence-based therapeutic interventions aimed toward reducing suicidal behavior such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Session 2: Treatment Collaborative for Traumatized Youth – Manual-based Treatments for Traumatized Youth

Myers, Simonich

Please join us for an overview of two evidence based interventions for the treatment of childhood trauma: Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress (SPARCS) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). In addition, we will describe how local clinicians are working together to learn, implement, and sustain these interventions in North Dakota.

3:00 - 5:00

Session 2: Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for Compulsive Buying

Mitchell

This workshop will focus on an empirically validated CBT approach for those with compulsive buying. The session will include a brief introductory lecture on the topic and then participants will, with Dr. Mitchell, work their way through the manual discussing how to use it in therapy. Participants will be e-mailed a copy of the manual prior to the session to download and bring with them to use during the session.
