About
NRI Press, a division of the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute, publishes manuals to assist professionals who work with patients who have eating disorders.

Previously we supplied these manuals to other clinicians/programs, but had no efficient mechanism to do this regularly.
Since many therapists have found these manuals useful and since there is a growing emphasis on using empirically-validated manual-based treatments, we have decided to "organize" our selling of these manuals so that it can be done in an efficient way.

The utility of only some of these materials has been supported by empirical research. These include the Bulimia Nervosa Group Treatment Manual, the Bulimia Nervosa Self-Help Manual, the BED Treatment Manual, and the original Healthy Eating Manual. These four have been previously used in randomized trials, and have been shown to have efficacy.

All profits from the sale of these manuals will be used to fund a small grants program through the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute. This program provides funding for younger investigators in our area who are beginning research careers in neuroscience.

Bulimia Nervosa
The following BN manuals are available:

• Therapist Guide to Bulimia Nervosa Treatment.
• Individual Treatment Manual for Bulimia Nervosa.
• Group Treatment Manual for Bulimia Nervosa.
• Self-Help Manual for Bulimia Nervosa.

The Eating Disorders Program originally developed this grouping of manuals at the University of Minnesota.

A Group Manual was shown to be more effective than a comparison antidepressant and comparison placebo in one randomized trial, and the approach was also shown to be most effective when administered in an intensive format with more than weekly visits, at least at the outset of therapy, in a second study.

The Individual Manual is identical to the group manual but formatted for individual therapy. The group and individual therapy manuals are designed to be followed by both the patient and the clinician, the patient having their own copy in which they complete rating forms and other tasks.

There is also a therapist guide, which explains the concepts behind the manuals, which are cognitive-behavioral in orientation. Lastly, there is now a self-help manual for bulimia nervosa available. We have recently shown this manual to be roughly equivalent to treatment with an antidepressant drug, and when used in combination with an antidepressant, to add effectiveness to drug therapy, in a randomized trial. The manual can be used in conjunction with supportive psychotherapy, or given to patients receiving pharmacotherapy.

Binge Eating Disorder
Group Therapy for Binge Eating Disorder. This manual was developed for, and used in, an earlier version in two randomized trials for obese individuals with binge eating disorder. The most recent version has been designed to be used in conjunction with an exercise program and calorically restricted dieting for obese individuals.

Healthy Eating Meal Planning System
This is a meal planning system now offered in two formats. This was originally developed to be used with the bulimia nervosa treatment manuals, and has been expanded now for use with patients who have anorexia nervosa. There are three manuals in this series:

•  Healthy Eating: A Dietitian’s Guide As this name indicates, this is a guide for dietitians on how to use the Healthy Eating Meal Planning System, and teaches them basic concepts about counseling this group of patients.
•  Healthy Eating: A Meal Planning System This is the basic manual followed by patients (as a workbook) and therapists to learn the Healthy Eating System, which is basically a modification of the Diabetic Exchange Diet.
•  Healthy Eating II: A Simplified Meal Planning System This is a simplified version of the original Healthy Eating Manual, using an approach to meal planning that seems to work better in certain situations, such as with very low weight anorectic patients who may be resistant to meal planning initially, or other patients where the complexity of the Healthy Eating System as it was originally developed may be too cumbersome.
•  Healthy Eating-Meal Planning & Food List (Pocket Guide) This is a pocket guide to the food lists contained in the Healthy Eating: A meal planning System.
